The country has been taking this week to remember the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and we started this week’s show with a look at how the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendercommunity is recovering one year later. Jody Gates of the Human Rights Campaign’s Board of Governors was our guest.
Then in Cup of Joe we went back to school with two leaders in the college GLBT community. Ryan Fournier broke ground by his election as the undergraduate student body president at Ohio State University one of the largest schools in the country. He talked about his election and the emergence of out gay student leaders. Shane Windmeyer was also our guest to talk about what prospective GLBT students should look for in a university. He’s the founder of Campus Pride Net a resource for GLBT students nationwide.
We turned to politics in The Skinny with Ellen Malcolm as our in-studio guest. She is the founder and president of EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest political action committee. We talked about some hot candidates as well as how women have increasingly taken leadership roles in elected positions because of the work of EMILY’s List. Listen to the interview here in part 1 and part 2.
Point of View took a hard look at religion, faith and fairness this week with Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire and the Rev. Susan Russell, president of the gay Episcopal group Integrity. They shared insights on reclaiming the morality debate from the religious right and the future of progressive religious voices. Listen to the fascinating conversation here in part 1 andpart 2.
