It was quite a special election eve episode last night — 12 guests, one correspondent and two hosts. And all with one thing on our minds: today’s election.

We started out the night with a package I produced on the eight states that will consider constitutional amendments banning marriage and in some cases even civil unions and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.

After that we zeroed in on four states — Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania — that are key races to control of Congress and GLBT issues.

Looking at Pennsylvania, Sultan Shakir — an HRC regional field director — talked to us from the ground in Philadelphia about Bob Casey’s bid to unseat anti-gay Sen. Rick Santorum. Then Tom Ferrick, political columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, joined us via phone to give his perspective.

We turned to New Jersey and Steve DeMicco, campaign manager for Sen. Bob Menendez, joined us. Following up we talked to Tom Moran, a reporter at The Newark Star Ledger with a view from the ground. Listen to the segment

Ohio is obviously a critical state this year and we were privileged to talk to Rep. Sherrod Brown, who’s hoping to unseat Republican Sen. Mike DeWine. Bringing the journalistic perspective was Jonathan Riskind of The Columbus Dispatch.

Finally, in Connecticut, three House Republicans are in danger, and Rep. Chris Shays’ campaign manager, Michael Sohn, joined us. Greg Hladky of The New Haven Register talked about the Republicans’ chances for survival.

After spending a little time in the weeds, we thought it was important to pull back and take a broad look at the electoral landscape. First we played a package I did on the more outrageous and controversial advertisements this cycle. Listen to the package.

Then Juan Williams of NPR and Fox News Channel joined Mary and Joe to count seats and help make sense of the tight races. Listen to parts one and two of this insightful conversation.

We closed on a light note with columnist and author Dan Savage who gave his perspective on Sen. Rick Santorum — the GLBT community’s No. 1 enemy.

By the way — if you haven’t voted yet, shut down you computer and get to your polling place right now!

Tonight we bring you a special "Election Eve" edition of The Agenda with Joe Solmonese. We’ve thrown out our usual format and are going to get down and dirty with the issues, the advertisements and the horse races that have made this election season a thrill to watch.

First up, we’ll take a look at the eight states that have ballot measures banning marriage and in some cases even civil unions and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.

Then our focus will be on four key states – Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Connecticut has three vulnerable House Republicans and their defeat could be an early warning that it will be a good night for Democrats. Republican Rep. Chris Shays’ campaign manager will join us. In New Jersey, Sen. Bob Menendez is running tight with Tom Kean Jr. and we’ll look at how the recent marriage decision could play a role there. In Ohio, Rep. Sherrod Brown is the favorite in the Senate race against incumbent Sen. Mike DeWine, and Brown will join us to explain why GLBT issues are important to him. Finally, in Pennsylvania Bob Casey has a good chance of unseating notoriously anti-gay Sen. Rick Santorum. In all of these states we’ll talk to someone from the campaigns as well as a local political reporter to give us the skinny.

Pulling back to 30,000 feet, we’ll take a broad look at the electoral landscape. First I’ll have a package on some of the more outrageous and controversial advertisements this cycle. Then Juan Williams of NPR and Fox News Channel will join us to count seats and make a few predictions.

To close out the show, columnist and author Dan Savage will be on the program to give his perspective on these midterm elections. Savage is of course famous for his crusade against anti-gay Sen. Rick Santorum.
