People may be focused on summer vacations but we had a great episode last night on The Agenda with Joe Solmonese.
We started out with some news of the day and that comes on the HIV/AIDS front. Dr. Marjorie Hill of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis was our guest to talk about two developments: a staggering underestimate of the number of new HIV infections in the U.S. and President Bush’s signature on a bill to end the travel and immigration ban on HIV-positive individuals. Turning to entertainment, we talked to the filmmakers behind the new documentary “Chris & Don: A Love Story.” Guido Santi and Tina Mascara edited and directed the story of the remarkable relationship between author Christopher Isherwood and artist Don Bachardy starting in the 1950s. Moving to the workplace, a new poll shows that Americans really don’t like their bosses. Commissioned by Working America (a community affiliate of the AFL-CIO), the poll gives insights into how Americans are dealing with the economic downturn and persevere through difficult circumstances. Working America Field Director Jenn Jannon was our guest. Download or listen:
Then we looked at the evolving news over marriage equality with two guests. Massachusetts opened the doors last week to out-of-state couples looking to tie the knot with the repeal of a 1913 law that many believe was originally designed to prevent interracial marriages. Mass. State Sen. Dianne Wilkerson led the effort to repeal the law and joined us to talk about it. Download or listen:
Across the country in California, the campaign to defend marriage equality there is heating up. From fundraising to a change in the ballot description, we sorted it all out with Steve Smith, the lead consultant on the Equality for All campaign. Download or listen:
Finally, we looked at the national political landscape with Time magazine’s Assistant Managing Editor Michael Duffy. A veteran of political journalism, he’s running the magazine’s campaign coverage this year. Download or listen:
