Last night we presented a special “Election Eve” edition of The Agenda with Joe Solmonese although with regular co-host Mary Breslauer absent to work on the No on Prop 8 campaign in California. With critical ballot measures in California, Florida, Arizona and Arkansas as well as pro-equality candidates from the top of the ticket down, there was a lot to cover with only a few hours until the polls open.
To get a national picture, we welcomed Pulitzer Prize winning columnist, author and speaker Ellen Goodman. Writing now for the Boston Globe, she has long been a chronicler of social change in America, especially the women’s movement and its effects on our public and private lives. Download or listen.
Among President Bush’s inner circle, former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan joined General Colin Powell in supporting Sen. Obama saying he represents the best chance to change the way Washington works. We welcomed McClellan to talk about his endorsement and give some insights on anti-gay policymaking in the Bush White House. Download or listen:
There is no one better to look at the lighter side of politics than Kate Clinton. She’s been entertaining audiences for 25 years with sharp wit combined with political insights. Currently performing her election year show “Hilarity Clinton ‘08” it was great to welcome her for some laughs. Download or listen:
Gender and race have been buzzwords this campaign season going back to the Democratic primaries. Now on the eve of the election we wanted to look back at those issues and discuss the way forward. Joining us on that topic was Faye Wattleton, president of the Center for the Advancement of Women. Download or listen:
If you listen to polls, the election seems to be in the bag for Barack Obama. We thought we’d take a look at the national and battleground numbers and the methodology behind likely voter models. Joining us for that is Dr. Scott Huffmon, a professor of political science at Winthrop University and the director of the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory there. Download or listen:
Taking a closer look at how LGBT voters will play a role in today’s election, Jon Barrett the editor-in-chief of The Advocate, joined us. From that perch he has overseen in-depth election coverage both in the magazine and on Advocate.com. Download or listen:
Finally, it was a treat to air a conversation I had with a big gay icon, Cynthia Nixon. She, of course played Miranda Hobbes on the Sex and the City series and film. I caught up with her recently while she was stumping for Barack Obama in Ohio and she talked about how she hopes our community will be the edge – rather than the wedge – in 2008. Download or listen:
Finally, don’t forget to vote today and encourage everyone you know to do the same!
